Inspiration: Jeff Gill

I love the work of Jeff Gill. Jeff is an illustrator/designer originally from Tucson, Arizona and now living in the United Kingdom working as a Children’s Pastor. Not only is he a great illustrator and designer, but he’s a really good writer. Nearly every one of his pieces has a short story that goes with it. The stories are funny and bizzare drops of creativity.

Jeff is also prolific. He puts out new designs nearly every other day. He’s done a few really cool series too. One, called “How to become a home-schooled religious wingnut in fifty (50) easy steps” is described as a “sort of autobiography.” Through the designs and writings, Jeff talks about growing up in an Evangelical Christian house and culture. It is hilarious and beautiful.

His most recent series is called “Flock,” described as “A book full of lies about birds and possibly some truths about people.” It contains iPhone illustrations of birds by Jeff along with a little write up for each one. Recently, Jeff released the Flock book and started selling prints of the illustrations, including a couple sweet hand colored prints (check ‘em out below).

Since a big part of Jeff’s designs are his write ups I’ve linked most of the images below back to his Flickr so you can click through and read his original write up.

The first 5 images are from “Flock.”

The rest of these are from “How to become a home-schooled religious wingnut in fifty (50) easy steps.” See the whole series on Jeff’s Flickr page.

Jim, maybe you could publish a WORD book, a little like Jeff’s flock book once you are done? I know I’d buy it!

    All the best – Dave

Thanks, Dave! I definitely plan to do something like that. I should actually try to get some advice from Jeff on how he put his together.
