It's no secret that creativity is absent in a majority of contemporary spiritual art. (A quick visit to a religious book store or web site proves that.) But have you ever wondered why that is the case? Or maybe even why that shouldn't be the case? A little while back, my Twitter bud (and Old & New contributor) Jon Ashcroft tweeted me a link to a video called "Why Jesus Creates." It's a talk from Jesse Bryan, Creative Director of Mars Hill in Seattle, and Don Clark, part of the phenomenal Invisible Creature duo (also in Seattle). In it, they not only explain why so much spiritual/religious art is lacking in creativity but also why that should not be the case.
Every so often I hit a creative/spiritual rut. I've found a few things that I can revisit to help get me out of times like that and back on track, and this is one of them. Enjoy.
