I'm ashamed at how long it's been since I've posted a new biblical design here. Sorry about that. After 2 years of Word and months of Old & New, I ended up neglecting my personal site. Recently I've been feeling a pull to get back into doing more biblical art so hopefully there will be more to come.

Shrt & Swt

Some of my favorite verses in the Bible are the short and sweet ones packed with meaning. One of those verses is 1 John 4:8.

God is love.

So simple, yet packed with meaning and implications. Love isn't merely something that describes God or something he does. Love is who God is. If you speak of one, you speak of the other.

I'm sure there are tons of crazy amazing theological revelations in this verse, but you'll need to check in with your local theonerd for those. To me, more than anything, it's just a beautifully accurate statement. At face value, it's one of those things simple and short enough for me to always come back to. God is love. Period.

Word Reject

During Word, I had an idea for an abstract typographic representation of this verse. But after spending a bunch of time trying to make the concept work, I could see I wasn't getting anywhere with it so I went a different direction for 1 John. But some concepts just won't let go. I kept thinking about it and I knew there was a way to pull it off. I just needed to figure out how.

A little while ago (around 8 months after my first attempt), I felt like it was time to tackle it again. Surprisingly, it seemed to come together really fast this time. The style is definitely a bit of a departure for me:

  • There is no texture.
  • It's completely done in Illustrator. I never even opened Photoshop.
  • It's far more abstract than anything from my Word project (did you see the two words in one at first glance?).

That said, I'm really happy with how it turned out and would love to try more stuff like this.
